CORPUS CHRISTI by Terrence McNally

What better place to adapt the story of Jesus Christ to modern times, than the unassuming city of Corpus Christi, Texas? Nobody will really ever know, what Jesus was actually like as individual. We know that he was a carpenter, what he stood for, and what he preached about; but the man himself is a bit of an enigma to us.
Perhaps this ambiguity is a product of the writers of the Bible, in trying to make it a well respected book, did not feel it was necessary to talk about his earthly ways and traits. Or maybe, because the Bible is supposed to be a divinely inspired piece of work, leaving out the personal details gave it a more ethereal and spiritual, quality and appeal.

For instance, we don't know if Jesus ever had a girlfriend, what his favorite color was, what animal he had an affinity for, or what food he liked most. However, with the play Corpus Christi, we have a chance to see the Jesus story in a way that is more tangible, personal and applicable to our lives.
For better or for worse, we have a scenario thrown at us in which we get to experience Jesus in a very human way. We get to see him interact with his 12 disciples, from the hustler to the hair dresser, with all their virtues and vices, as they try to make their way in modern life. We witness some of the day to day concerns and issues the disciples, as well as Jesus, may have had in our present day. We get to see what the story could have been like if Jesus were a gay man. We witness Jesus grappling with curiosity and confusion, and a mutual attraction for Judas, his eventual betrayer, an attraction they act upon with physical intimacy a couple of times.
This did not define who Jesus was in any way though, and actually was quite the opposite. It was just a desire that he had as a human being, as a gay man. This did not affect his utmost love for God the father and for mankind, or for his ultimate devotion to God and His children. His values of love and faith were well intact, as his passion for Judas was an innocent desire emanating from a pure heart. In response to the present day resistance to gays and the use of the Bible to combat and vilify homosexuality, Jesus remarks that if a teaching does not arise out of love, then it is not a teaching of God.
The message highlighted in the movie, as in the Bible, is one of humility and servitude to our fellow man. This really resonates loudly in our life and times, as we are taught by society that to be a follower is to be weak. Jesus replied to this misconception in the play, saying that it is not a weakness, but a strength, to be a follower and to serve others. Jesus himself shows his subservience to mankind when he, the Son of God, kisses the feet of a skeptic.
It is no wonder that the story of Jesus Christ has been with us for so long. It is a pure message of kindness and caring that transcends any of our personal drama, quirks or deficiencies, and the minutiae of our lives. The details aren't what matter, it is the intention of the heart in which they are carried out and performed that does. We can all rest assured that we are created in the image of God, and it is up to us what we want to do with that.
