It's who we are. It's where we are, and it's bound to change with another generation of gay women who are out and proud to call themselves as they see themselves. So having said that, let me engage you with something that I hope to be just the beginning of our journey to define, then redefine, what we feel is the modern-day lesbian. The modern-day lesbian is young, too young at times. She is old, too old ? for whom? By whose standards is she any age? She wears new jeans that exceed her budget. She wears old jeans that exceed this decade. She wears jeans, because that's how she sees herself. She has an abstract, unidentifiable hair style because it was the best her money could buy. She plays it safe with a dependable haircut that never lets her down. She wears whatever she wakes up with. She buys this hair, because it's how she sees herself. She drinks beer. She orders martinis. She buys rounds of shots, washed down with beers and martinis. And this is how she sees herself. She's educated. She's successful. She's really just getting by to learn the world around her. She frequents sports bars, and she loves the theater. She's on the list at every club and party, because this is how she sees herself. She travels. She searches. She fights and she hustles. She loves to be noticed and refuses to be ignored. She's shy. She's angry. She the nicest person I've ever met. She defies the odds. She sets a new standard. And we think she's just plain FlawLes.
