Diversionary Theatre was founded in 1986 to provide quality theatre for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. The mission of the theatre is to produce plays with gay, lesbian and bisexual themes that portray characters in their complexity and diversity both historically and contemporarily.
Diversionary Theatre is recognized as one of San Diego's best theaters. Though its history has been long and varied, it is one of the most vibrant showcases of theatrical talent in the city.
Over the last four years the theater has elevated its productions and extended its season. The response has been remarkable, as its productions regularly receive "Critic's Choice", "Don't miss it" reviews, and multiple awards.

Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate?
Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, Dan Karslake's provocative, entertaining documentary brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible. As the film notes, most Christians live their lives today without feeling obliged to kill anyone who works on the Sabbath or eats shrimp (as a literal reading of scripture dictates).
Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

MOXIE Theatre is a professional non-profit theatre founded by the critically acclaimed group of performers and directors; Jo Anne Glover, Liv Kellgren, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and Jennifer Eve Thorn.
MOXIE fans know that each distinct MOXIE production will always share one similar quality – moxie. Moxie is defined as “courage, pluck, gumption, perseverance, guts." It may be the hero of a play who embodies the term moxie, or a challenging subject matter. Perhaps a playwright has invented an original world for audiences to explore, or actors are asked to stretch to new heights and break new ground in story-telling. In whatever way it is revealed, moxie is the unifying quality that defines all of our productions.
MOXIE Theatre is currently without a permanent space, but plans to call Encinitas home. Though most of the third season will take place at the fabulous Lyceum Theatre inside Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego, MOXIE remains dedicated to building a theatre community in Encinitas.

A commitment by young graduates of SDSU’s theatre program to practice edgy, controversial work was the seed for this small theatre company. It began as a commitment by women artists to find a home for their craft and to promote women’s issues and roles in the theatre but has evolved to something much more. The company name comes from the children’s book about a village working together to create a feast for all to enjoy. |
